About the Festival

Honoring Imoka

The Imo Awka Festival is an ancient and vibrant traditional cultural event celebrated annually by the people of Awka in Anambra State, Nigeria. It stands as one of the most significant festivals in Igbo cultural heritage.

At the heart of the festival is Imoka, a powerful female deity regarded as the greatest guardian goddess of Awka. She protects the town from external invasions, evil forces, and misfortunes, while granting prosperity, peace, and favor to her people.

The Sacred White-Bellied Monkey

The Imoka shrine is symbolically represented by the Enwe Imo Oka(white-bellied monkey), revered as a sacred messenger of the deity and strictly protected in the area.
